An Introduction to Year of the WordTimothy "TA" Ateek • Jan 5, 2025 |
Two disciples walked seven miles with the risen Jesus and didn’t recognize him. They were near him, but blind to who he was. In Luke 24, we’re reminded that it’s possible to be around Jesus without truly seeing him. But when the Spirit opens our eyes through the Word, we see him clearly, and seeing Jesus always leads to worship.
It’s possible to be with Jesus and not see Jesus. The disciples on the road to Emmaus walked beside Jesus, yet didn’t realize it was him. Spiritual blindness keeps us disciplined but not delighted, busy but not worshipful.
It takes a work of God to see Jesus. Only the Holy Spirit can open our eyes to recognize who Jesus truly is (John 16:13–14). Spiritual sight isn’t earned through effort—it’s a gift of grace.
The Word of God exists for us to see Jesus. When Jesus explained Scripture to the disciples, he showed that the entire Bible points to him.
You will know when you have seen Jesus. When the disciples finally recognized Jesus, their hearts burned within them. Seeing him produces passion, joy, and a desire to share what you’ve experienced. True worship isn’t forced; it flows from fresh sight of Christ.
Together as a church family in 2025, we are reading the whole Bible in a year to help us abide deeply in Jesus and better understand the entire story of the Bible. For Year of the Word resources like devotionals, podcasts, and more, check out our daily Bible reading plan: Join The Journey.
