Summary

In Luke 10, Jesus visits the home of Mary and Martha. Martha is busy serving, while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet to listen. Both women love Jesus deeply, but Jesus gently corrects Martha: she’s distracted and anxious about many things, while Mary has chosen “the good portion.” Serving matters deeply to Jesus but being with him matters most.

This passage reminds us that time with Jesus must come before service for Jesus. When we sit with him, our service becomes joyful, Spirit-led, and rooted in love—not frustration or self-reliance.

Key Takeaways

  • Serving is very important to Jesus. He calls his followers to serve faithfully and sacrificially.
  • Serving can distract you from Jesus. Even good things become distractions when they replace time with him.
  • Sitting with Jesus must be a non-negotiable for disciples of Jesus. Time in his presence is essential, not optional.
  • Sitting with Jesus leads to serving that is pleasing to Jesus. Abiding produces the kind of service that honors him and blesses others.

Discussing and Applying the Sermon

  1. What stands out to you about Mary and Martha’s different responses to Jesus?
  2. Why do you think Jesus calls Mary’s choice “the good portion”? What does that mean for you personally?
  3. How have you seen serving distract you from actually being with Jesus?
  4. What rhythms or habits help you make time with Jesus a non-negotiable part of your day or week?
  5. Describe a time when being with Jesus changed the way you served others. What was different about your attitude or your energy?
