Biblical Love in Marriage Part 2 | Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage

Year of the Word

As a second part to last week’s message, TA walked through Watermark's Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage statement, Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 19, and Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 7 to explain God’s design for marriage as a lifelong covenant. TA urged believers to pursue what is most glorifying to God, not simply what is most relieving, and reminded us that marriage is meant to reflect Christ’s unwavering love for his Church.

Summary

What does biblical faithfulness look like when marriage is broken? In Matthew 19, Jesus reinforces God’s original design for marriage: one man and one woman joined together for life. “What God has joined together, let not man separate” isn’t just a phrase for weddings—it’s God’s high view of covenant love.

Key Takeaways

  • Stay married. The remedy for a marriage that is not honoring to the Lord is not divorce; it is repentance. Where there is repentance, the goal should be reconciliation.
  • Pursue what is most glorifying, not what is most relieving. He is most glorified by repentance and reconciliation. The love Christ has for us his church is actually displayed in your marriage most when you choose to love your spouse at their most unlovable points.
  • Remember the gospel. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
