Trusting God's Plans for Your Life | Acts 27

Acts of The Holy Spirit

Through Paul's journey to Rome in Acts 23–28, we see that God is sovereign over every detail of our lives, including the delays, detours, and difficulties we don't understand. Despite imprisonment, opposition, and suffering, God accomplished his plans for Paul in his power and at his pace. The same is true for us. While Satan seeks to distract and discourage us, we can trust that God's plans are good, even when they look different from our own. As we surrender to Jesus, we can experience greater intimacy with him and be used for his purposes in every season.

Summary

Through Paul's journey to Rome in Acts 23–28, we see that God is sovereign over every detail of our lives, including the delays, detours, and difficulties we don't understand. Despite imprisonment, opposition, and suffering, God accomplished his plans for Paul in his power and at his pace. The same is true for us. While Satan seeks to distract and discourage us, we can trust that God's plans are good, even when they look different from our own. As we surrender to Jesus, we can experience greater intimacy with him and be used for his purposes in every season.

Key Takeaways

  • God will accomplish all his plans for your life in his power and at his pace (Acts 23-28):
    • God's plans: God had a specific purpose for Paul's life, and even the delays and detours were part of it. God has prepared good works for us, too. Rather than going through the motions, we can surrender each day and ask what he wants to do in and through us.
    • God's power: Paul had little control over his circumstances, but God was sovereign over every detail. We can trust that God is in control even when life feels chaotic, finding greater peace and joy in dependence on him than in trying to control our circumstances.
    • God's pace: Paul spent years waiting to reach Rome, but he arrived exactly when God intended. Our lives may not look the way we expected by now, but we can trust God's timing rather than comparing our lives to others.
  • Satan will seek to thwart God's plans for your life (Acts 27:4; 28:3–6): Satan seeks to keep us from surrendering to Jesus and displaying God's goodness through our lives. Though Jesus has already defeated Satan through his death and resurrection, we must remain alert to three ways the enemy seeks to disrupt our faith:
    • Discouragement: Tempting us to doubt God's goodness when life is difficult.
    • Discontentment: Convincing us that we need different circumstances to experience joy.
    • Distraction: Drawing our attention and affection toward things other than Jesus.
  • God's plans for your life are good (Acts 28; Philippians 4:12–13): God's plans for Paul included significant suffering, but they also led to greater intimacy with Jesus and opportunities to share the gospel. God's goodness isn't measured by whether we get what we want or avoid hardship. Even in suffering, we can trust that God is at work in us and through us for his glory.

Notable Quotes

Charles Swindoll: “You have, like no other person on this planet, particular contributions that you are to make to this generation. They may not be as great as your dreams, or they might be far beyond your expectations; but whatever they are, you are to find them and carry them out.”

Discussing and Applying the Sermon

  • If you were to rate God's plans for your life right now, what would you say? What circumstances are shaping how you view his goodness?
  • Where in your life are you most tempted to take control rather than trust God's power? What would depending on him look like in that situation?
  • What are some of your "by nows"—things you expected to have or experience by this point in your life? How have those expectations affected your contentment and trust in God's timing?
  • Of the three tools Satan uses (discouragement, discontentment, and distraction) which are you most susceptible to right now? How is it affecting your relationship with Jesus?
  • What's one practical way you can surrender your plans to him and be available for his purposes this week?
