Sickening & Senseless Tragedy

I had not heard the news when my son texted, “Charlie Kirk was just shot.”

My stomach dropped in disgust and disbelief over another shooting.

Charlie Kirk was a conservative Christian who often engaged in political debate. Known for founding Turning Point USA and his “Prove Me Wrong” debates on college campuses, his voice represented the views of many Republicans as well as evangelical Christians. He spoke out for the sanctity of human life, the biblical definition of marriage, and the protection of kids from gender fluid ideology. Rising above demeaning or profane rhetoric, he simply stated his view to anyone who would listen. For this reason, someone chose to assassinate him in cold blood.

What a sickening and senseless tragedy.

Regardless of one’s political beliefs, every American should be disgusted over such a tragic loss of life. We live in a country where every citizen is blessed with the freedom of speech. When people cannot voice their political point of view without the fear of being killed, our exceptional country will lose its soul.

With Charlie’s assassination heavy on my heart, I’m reminded that all of us will wake up tomorrow to the anniversary of the September 11th attacks. On this day, 24 years ago, 2,977 people were killed by terrorists. I’ve visited the 9/11 memorial and toured the museum. The experience left me speechless.

What a sickening and senseless tragedy.

Following such tragedies, people will debate gun laws and the state of mental health; they will offer political solutions and advocate for policies. To be sure, there is much brokenness in our world and in our country. But the ultimate solution is not found in a political policy, but in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Only Christ can transform the hearts of men.

In moments such as these, it is right to pray, grieve, and weep. But we must also share the hope we have in Christ.

So, church family, I implore you, do not be ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for the salvation of all who believe (Romans 1:16). Declare it boldly. Pray for Charlie’s wife and children to experience comfort. Pray for our nation to experience repentance and revival. Pray that Charlie’s death serves as a true turning point in the soul of our nation and that more people come to trust in Jesus. Furthermore, take heart and “Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb” (Psalm 37:1-3).

See you on Sunday,
