We all love stories of a valiant hero who defeats the evil villain and rescues people who have been captured by the enemy. This plot is at the heart of so many great books and movies and it all points back to the greatest story, the one we’re in the middle of right now. Through the Bible we see God, our Hero, coming to save His people who are prisoners of their own sin and incapable of saving themselves. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross we can be saved from our inevitable fate and welcomed into the Hero’s family forever. This story isn’t over. It’s still being written and the Bible gives us hints of what will happen when the Hero comes to defeat the villain once and for all.

WE BELIEVE: Future Things

This Week’s Finish Line: Know What You Believe about Future Things

We might not know a lot about what the future will look like, but we do know one thing for sure: Jesus is coming back! Jesus is going to come back to fulfill prophecy, defeat His enemies and rule forever as the perfect King. Sadly, people who didn’t choose to follow Him will be separated from Him forever and receive the punishment we all deserve because of sin. But for those of us who have put our faith in Him and received forgiveness and grace, we’ll get to be with God forever! Imagine how wonderful that will be when God makes everything new, wipes away every tear and lives with us as our perfect King. Because of Jesus, we can have hope that someday everything sad will disappear and we’ll get to see how amazing God is face to face!

Family Questions:

  1. Read John 14:1-3. What does Jesus promise His disciples? What do you think it will be like when Jesus comes back?
  2. How can we know if we’ll get to be with God forever? Read John 3:16-21. Talk with your kids about the amazing gift of salvation that’s available to everyone because of what Jesus did on the cross.
  3. What do you think Heaven will be like? When you think about Jesus coming back, what are you most excited about?

Bring it Home Conversations & Activities:

* Check out our vision for parents and how to use these activities each week.

Teacher: Jesus is Coming Back!

While around the table with your family, pull out the “Future Things” hand out. As a family, talk about the first two points of the handout about Jesus coming back and what he is going to do. Be sure to help them understand that Jesus coming back is not hypothetical, but it is REAL! Read John 14:1-3 and discuss the promises Jesus makes in that passage. Jesus always keeps his promises.

Friend: Heaven

Spend some time with your family by gathering some paper and markers. Have everyone draw a picture of what they think Heaven may look like or what it will be like when Jesus comes back. After everyone is done drawing, go around in a circle describing your picture and what you imagine it will all be like. Use this opportunity to tell your kids the Gospel again and how they can know they will get to be with God forever.

Counselor: Why Are We Excited?

As you are putting your family to bed for the night, talk about the third truth on the handout. Why is it exciting that Jesus is coming back? Tell them why it gives you hope knowing that Jesus is coming back. Discuss how Jesus coming back means that sin will be defeated and that those who are His children will no longer live in a fallen world. Pray for your kids to understand the truth of the Gospel.

Coach: Today Matters

As you are getting your family ready for the day, ask them, "How can you live today believing that Jesus is coming back? Does it give you a greater desire to tell people about Jesus?" Encourage your kids to remember that how they live each day matters even when it doesn’t feel like it.

Prayer

God, thank You that Jesus is coming back. Thank you that we can know we will be with you forever if we accept your gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. I pray for excitement and hope for these future things, and for boldness to share them with my friends. Amen.
