I have had the privilege of being part of Watermark since its start in 1999. Growing up, my family facilitated a church-going environment, but it wasn’t as much about living to honor and please God as much as it was making sure we looked like we were pleasing Him. I had a warped view of God’s love for me, which manifested itself in an unbalanced perception of the Father. I saw His hardness but was blind to His mercy. My faith was “works-based” throughout high school, and my heart was hard and judgmental. Thankfully, God opened my eyes to His grace and mercy through a huge wake-up call in college when I realized that my legalism was pushing people away from me. It was then that I began to realize that God’s just-ness is balanced with compassion. It is His compassion that draws us to His Son, and His kindness that leads us to repentance. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, which is a truth I remind myself of daily. I am so thankful that Christ has loved me in spite of my faults. Because He first loved me, I desire to respond by living out 1 Timothy 1:5, “The aim of our charge is love, which issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.”
Loyalty is my thing; it defines me. I am a “die hard” Patriot, Texan, and Fightin’ Texas Aggie, WHOOP! Spanish is my second language, and I am most at ease when I’m with my family eatin’ crawfish. Movies are my favorite topic! I can guarantee that within a five-minute conversation I will either quote, reference, or recommend a movie to whomever I am speaking. I have an ongoing game with my little sister where one of us leaves a voicemail of an obscure movie quote that the other must guess its origin. So far, I’m winning…any challengers?
