Giving at Watermark

Every single dollar stewarded at Watermark is part of the “missions budget,” strategically deployed to advance God’s mission here and around the world. We don't “pass the plate” but that’s not because there isn’t great need. In fact, we have more opportunities than resources at any given time. Rather, we believe this is the best way to facilitate joyful giving (2 Corinthians 9:7, Matthew 6:4). Let us all prayerfully consider how we might continue to invest in this mission with our hearts and God’s possessions.

Giving to Specific Funds

If you are choosing to make a gift, your gifts can be designated to the General Fund, which supports the day-to-day ministries and church support services, to the Building Fund, which supports building and development opportunities across all of our campuses, or to one of our Local or International Initiatives.

You will notice in our giving options that you can choose a general fund based on which campus you attend. We use the campus information for reporting purposes, but the final decision about the allocation of all general funds rests with the Elders and other campus leaders as they prayerfully seek God's direction in how to direct God's resources invested at Watermark.

What We Believe About Giving

"Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
- 2 Corinthians 9:7

We believe the giving of our firstfruits is an act of worship, a way that honors God (Proverbs 3:9) while also living mindfully that ALL we own, not just what we give is the Lord's (Psalm 24:1). God is a giver of eternal gifts (John 3:16, 1 Corinthians 2:12) and temporal (Deuteronomy 8:17-18, James 1:17) and when a follower of Christ freely and joyfully gives away their increase, whether it be money, possessions, time, or talents, they are imitating God. We are excited about your desire to give, not only because of how your gift will allow us to continue to be about our mission of being and making disciples, but also because of what your gift prayerfully communicates to the world about your heart and relationship with God (2 Corinthians 9:12-15) and how investing wisely benefits you (Acts 20:35, Luke 12:33).

Finance FAQ

What is Watermark’s total budget?

$27.1 million across all campuses for fiscal year ending June 30, 2021.

What is Watermark’s missions budget?

$27.1 million! Every dollar we spend advances God’s mission in DFW and around the world.

We shared more than $800,000 of our budget with local and international ministry partners to support causes like family restoration, anti-sex trafficking, healthcare, education, mentoring, prison ministry, life initiatives, and more.

The body contributed an additional $2.5 million supporting external ministry partners and international discipleship trips through “Designated Giving” funds for orphan care, disaster relief, Urgent Care clinics, etc.

Why don’t we “pass the plate” for giving at Watermark?

It’s not because there isn’t a need. We believe the best way to facilitate joyful giving (2 Corinthians 9:7, Matthew 6:4) is not to prompt it with a specific moment in the service, but to provide our body with opportunities to give as the Lord leads. Anyone can give online at, send checks by mail, or place gifts in the giving boxes across our campuses. About 25% of our annual giving is received each December.

What is Watermark’s budget allocation?

85% of our budget goes directly to Kingdom work, including all weekend and midweek ministries, our staff, local and international ministry partners, conferences, and other strategic investments in churches locally and around the world.

15% of our budget goes toward operating, maintaining, and developing campus facilities, which are used throughout the week.

Does Watermark have any debt?

We gratefully celebrate that we have never incurred any debt.

How are budgets approved and managed?

Each ministry and department creates a budget every year, evaluating what we should keep doing, start doing, and stop doing. Budgets are then reviewed by our internal Finance Team; our lay-led Business Advisory Team, which provides leadership in our budget planning and implementation; and our Elders, who ultimately approve the budget.

We rigorously track every dollar in and out of Watermark, with monthly reporting for each department. Our annual financial statements are audited by an outside firm to ensure accuracy.

How did the budget change from last year?

With the roll-off of the Fort Worth campus and the upcoming roll-off of the Plano campus in January 2021, our total budget decreased by $4.1 million from last year. Our remaining budget stayed essentially flat year-over-year. Over the past three years, our budget has increased an average of 8% annually.

The only way our budget is maintained or can increase is through the generous giving of our body. We continually look for ways to use funds more effectively, cutting budgets where cost-saving opportunities are found. If additional staff hires are necessary to support growth, there is a rigorous vetting process before requests are approved. Our actual spending has consistently been less than budgeted, and any extra funds are put toward strategic priorities.

Has COVID impacted our budget and giving?

We reviewed and appropriately adjusted all ministry budgets specifically in light of COVID-19. With those reductions, we maintained an essentially flat overall budget while still investing in strategic priorities, such as the growth of the Watermark Institute. Thankfully, we were not forced to lay off any staff.

To date, giving has been on track to meet our budget for this fiscal year. However, since 25% of annual giving is typically received in December, we won’t have a clear picture on giving until early 2021. Thank you for your continued generosity, and please pray with us that God will meet our needs.

How do we prepare for the unexpected?

Given that our economy cycles over time and we could be impacted in a downturn, we see wisdom in maintaining reserves for the unknown. In accordance with the direction of our Business Advisory Team, we set aside funds to cover three months of operating expenses, along with a reserve account to fund facilities repairs and maintenance.

What significant opportunities are ahead?
  • Phase 1 construction of our new South Dallas campus. Our body has given generously, but there remains a significant shortfall in the resources required. Targeted completion: mid-2021.
  • Watermark Resources’ work strengthening church leaders worldwide.
  • A permanent facility for our Frisco campus.
  • A dedicated space in Dallas for the Watermark Institute.

These projects depend on the provision of resources by our body.

How do I get more information?
