This is Promotion Weekend! Whether you are new to Watermark Kids or are joining us for another year, we’re so glad you and your family are here. Colossians 2:3 says, “In Him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” How do you find hidden treasure? You have to look for it! So, we will spend the year learning more about God’s Word and His character.
Each year in Watermark Kids, we learn about character traits of a godly person. In fact, over the course of three years, kids will learn 36 godly character traits, along with a definition and memory verse for each. For a list of the 12 character traits we will be learning this year, click here! This year, we will also be walking through our We Believe curriculum as we take a look at what we as Christ followers believe about The Bible, God, Sin/Salvation, the Church, and Future Things. We are excited about a year of partnering with parents to teach kids who God is and that His Word is living, active, and useful, even in the lives of Kinder – 5th graders!
- Read Colossians 2:2-3 together. If something is hidden, what do you have to do to find it?
- Where are all of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden?
- Think about someone you admire or look up to because of the way they follow Jesus. What do you admire about them? How can you have godly character traits like that person?
* Check out our vision for parents and how to use these activities each week.
Teacher: Meal Time
Read Philippians 1:9-11. Think about things you believe are important in your life. According to these verses, what really matters in our lives? Can we make righteous character happen on our own? What if we know all the right answers, act kind and obedient and do what we know we’re supposed to do? Does that mean we have Godly character? Why/why not? (Godly character is not just about our actions and doing the right thing on the outside. God looks inside at our hearts. Someone can say or do the right thing but have a bad heart. Jesus can change our hearts so we become more like Him and have godly character on the inside. That change on the inside eventually shows on the outside in our actions.)
Friend: Drive Time
Spend time in the car this week talking about your kids’ upcoming year in Watermark Kids. What was their favorite part of K1 Race, On Your Mark, or Crossroads 45 this past weekend? Ask them about their leaders – what are their names, did you learn any fun facts about your leaders at church, etc.? Talk to your kids about what they hope to learn at church this year and be ready to encourage them with something you hope they learn, too!
Thank God that all of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ! Thank Him for His Word and how it teaches us more about God’s perfect character. Pray that this would be a year that God would use to grow you in each of the areas you will be learning about in Watermark Kids.
One day this week, watch a movie or TV show together as a family. Tell your kids before you start to be paying attention to different character traits they see in each person in the movie (positive or negative). After it ends, discuss what everyone saw in the characters. Discuss ways each character could have responded in more godly ways. Ask your kids if they can think of any practical ways they can learn more about godly character traits this year. (Hint: study Philippians 1:9-11 & Colossians 2:2-3 to find out!)
Thank God for all He has planned for you and your small group over this next school year. Ask Him to help you lead your kiddos with wisdom and grace as you search for the treasure found only in Christ together.
Next week we will have a We Believe Weekend!
