First time to do the Family Night Challenge? Watch our intro video first.

This Week's Lesson: The Fiery Furnace

For preschoolers, you may want to read from The Beginner's Bible, "Fiery Furnace" (p.247-250.) For older kids, read Daniel 3 together as a family.

Watch Jeff Parker's message to learn how to have an "Even If" faith.

What challenge went wrong for the Knights of Narnia?

Family Night Discussion Questions:

  1. Why did King Nebuchadnezzar throw Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego into the fiery furnace?
  2. Why didn’t Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego bow down when the music played?
  3. Read Daniel 3:17. Did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego trust that God could save them from the furnace?
  4. Read Daniel 3:18. Did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego trust God even if he didn’t save them from the furnace?
  5. Did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego let what was happening to them change what they believed about God?
  6. Who protected Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the furnace?
  7. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego trusted God even in a scary situation. What are some hard things that happen in your life that you can choose to trust God in?
  8. What are some things that we can do today to have an “Even If” faith in our lives?

Family Night Ideas for Fun:

  • Create a family mission statement for the upcoming school year.
  • Do a puzzle as a family.
  • Have a fancy dinner: use nice dishes, light a candle, turn down the lights and have everyone dress up for dinner.
  • Make "Fiery Furnace" crescent rolls. Heat your oven as directed for the canned crescent rolls. Place a crescent roll on a baking sheet, place a regular-sized chocolate (or plain if you can’t find chocolate) marshmallow (to be the "coals") in the center, then place three Teddy Grahams (Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego) on top of the marshmallow. Wrap the crescent roll “furnace” around the marshmallow and crackers. Repeat with the rest of the rolls, then bake according to the directions. Remove rolls and open up the “furnace” to show your child that the hot coals are gone, but Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were not harmed in the furnace.
  • Set up an obstacle course outside with plenty of things for the kids to jump over, crawl through and climb on. Call the course the “furnace”. Fill up a container with water balloons. Have the kids attempt the course and toss balloons at them while they are running through to try to “put out the fire”. See if they can make it through without getting hit.
  • OR choose your own fun activity.

Throughout the summer we have a unique opportunity to learn together as families. Our entire church, from preschool to elementary to adults, will be focusing on the same Bible passage each week. To make the most of this time, we are issuing the Summer Family Night Challenge! Here is what you need to do:

  1. Watch the Sunday message together as a family either online or in person. Find the Plano messages here.
  2. Set aside a night of the week to be your Family Night for the next six weeks.
  3. Visit the Plano Kids Kit page each week for videos, discussion questions and fun activity ideas that you can use to plan your Family Night.

Your two goals for your Family Night should be to have fun and have some intentional conversation around God's Word.
