This Week's Lesson: Jesus Feeds the 5000

For preschoolers, you may want to read from The Jesus Storybook Bible, "Filled Full!" (p.244-249.) For older kids, read Mark 6:30-44 together as a family.

Watch Derek Mathew's message from Sunday, August 9.

What are the Knights trying to do with all those goldfish crackers?

Family Night Discussion Questions:

  1. What is a miracle? (Something wonderful only God can do.)
  2. What did the little boy have to give Jesus? Was this a lot to share with a big crowd?
  3. What do you think the disciples thought about Jesus when they saw the food multiplying?
  4. How did Jesus satisfy the people by shepherding them?
  5. How did Jesus satisfy the people by serving them?
  6. How did Jesus satisfy the people by saving them?
  7. What things of this world do you try and find satisfaction in over Jesus?
  8. What are some ways that we can go to Jesus to fill our hearts today?

Family Night Ideas for Fun:

  • Use old magazines to tear out pictures and make a “favorite-things” collage. Use the pictures to inspire dinner time conversations.
  • Make homemade playdough. (There are plenty of recipes on the internet.) Then shape the dough into fish and loaves and talk about the sermon.
  • Play hopscotch on your sidewalk.
  • Talk about how Jesus provided for the people in the message. Make a list of ways that Jesus has provided for your family and have a special time of prayer for all the things Jesus has done for your family.
  • Show your children a spoonful of popcorn kernels. Ask them if it’s enough to feed the family a snack. Use an air popper or cook them on the stove. Show them how a lot can be made from a little and relate it to the story of Jesus feeding the 5000. Emphasize the popcorn was a fun trick, but Jesus did a real miracle when He fed the 5000 with two fish and five loaves.
  • OR choose your own fun activity.

Throughout the summer we have a unique opportunity to learn together as families. Our entire church, from preschool to elementary to adults, will be focusing on the same Bible passage each week. To make the most of this time, we are issuing the Summer Family Night Challenge! Here is what you need to do:

  1. Watch the Sunday message together as a family either online or in person. Find the Plano messages here.
  2. Set aside a night of the week to be your Family Night for the next six weeks.
  3. Visit the Plano Kids Kit page each week for videos, discussion questions and fun activity ideas that you can use to plan your Family Night.

Your two goals for your Family Night should be to have fun and have some intentional conversation around God's Word.
