In Christ Are Hidden All the Treasures

This weekend is Promotion Weekend! As everyone moved up to new classes today, we took some time to go over our entire curriculum for elementary. We study 36 character traits (12 per year!), so this today we got excited to go over the ones we will be studying this year. We are excited to see what God will teach all of us this year, and are praying for God to keep transforming our hearts to be more like Him.

KEY VERSE: “I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. In Him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Colossians 2:2-3 (NLT)

Family Questions:

  1. Look at Philippians 1:9-11 together. What character traits would you use to describe a godly person?
  2. Read Colossians 2:2-3 together too. If something is hidden, what do you have to do to find it?
  3. Where are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden?
  4. Think about someone you admire or look up to because of the way they follow Jesus. What do you admire about them? How can you have godly character traits like that person?

Bring it Home Conversations & Activities:

* Check out our vision for parents and how to use these activities each week.

Teacher: Godly Character Traits

At dinner this week, ask your kids again to list out some godly character traits they can think of. Next to each one, try to think of a verse or a story in the Bible that illustrates each character trait.

Friend: Overflowing Heart

While driving in the car this week, talk about things that can overflow. Have they ever seen a flood when rivers and lakes overflow? What happened? Has anyone ever left the sink or bathtub running and that overflowed? Did anything besides water come out? In the same way, our actions are an overflow of our heart! Pray together that your actions will show the godly character traits you are learning, and pray that God will keep transforming your hearts to be like His!

Counselor: Remembering Truth

During bedtime this week, ask your kids to think of a time when they displayed a godly character trait like faith, courage, hope, joy, etc. What happened? Was there a verse in Scripture that helped him or her remember and learn how to respond in that situation? How have you seen your child grow in this area?

Coach: Character's Characteristics

One day this week, watch a movie together as a family. Tell your kids before you start to be paying attention to different character traits they see in each person in the movie (positive or negative). After it ends, have a discussion about each one everyone saw in the characters. Discuss ways each character could have responded in more godly ways. Ask your kids some practical steps they can do to learn more about godly character traits. (Hint: study Philippians 1:9-11 & Colossians 2:2-3 to find out!)

Thank God for all He has planned for you and your small group over this next school year. Ask Him to help you lead your kiddos with wisdom and grace as you search for the treasure found only in Christ together.

Looking Ahead

Next week is a timeline Sunday! We will be going through the whole Bible to see how all the stories we learn about actually fit together into one big story that God is writing!
