OUR MISSION

The Watermark Institute was created to invest in, develop, and deploy the next generation of church leaders. We have two distinct tracks within The Watermark Institute: The Fellowship and The Residency. Our Fellowship and Residency opportunities combine biblical training, discipleship, and hands-on ministry experience to fully equip gifted leaders who desire to serve in vocational ministry.

FAQ

What does class time look like?

Past Fellows and Residents agree this is one of the best parts of the experience. Over the course of ten months, you will complete an overview study of the New and Old Testament and read several books that will deepen your understanding of God’s Word. During the fall, the focus is on the books of the Old Testament, with a study of the New Testament in the spring. The Residents and Fellows will study systematic theology and apologetics, along with receiving practical instruction on topics such as teaching a message, counseling from scripture, and employing biblical conflict resolution in everyday life. These sessions will be presented by from various directors on the Watermark staff.

What’s it like to be on staff?

What's it like to work at Watermark? In a word: awesome. It's challenging, purposeful, joyful, adventurous, and rewarding. Ultimately, we're a family working together to do God's bidding. Around here, we trust each other, celebrate each other, and spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Everyone is a leader, and we expect everyone to act like an owner by initiating with others and caring for the people God places in our path. We think this is one of the best places to work. If you don't believe us, just ask the Dallas Morning News.

God's Word is our only playbook, and we know the Lord wants to use His people, the Church, in radical ways to make His name great. “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him.” (2 Chronicles 16:19) God is constantly doing great works and deploying His people, so we frequently ask, “Lord, why not use us?" So, with grateful hearts and a monumental mission, we seek to call all people to become fully-devoted followers of Christ. We are always looking for faithful servants to join us on this mission.

Will I be discipled?

Yes. The Watermark Institute helps Fellows and Residents develop a comprehensive understanding of God’s Word while developing the skills needed for effective ministry. Whether you are serving, working with a ministry team leader, or studying Scripture alongside key leaders at Watermark, every element of the Residency and Fellowship emphasizes discipleship and spiritual growth.

Is this an internship?

No. Interns are often inexperienced candidates who are evaluating their professional plans and looking for exposure to a working environment. All of our Residents and Fellows are gifted leaders who are entrusted with meaningful roles and responsibilities at Watermark. Each member of the team serves with excellence and possesses a strong sense of the Lord’s calling in their lives.

What’s the difference between The Fellowship and Residency?

  • A Fellow is typically 25-35 years old, experienced in ministry, pursuing vocational ministry, and seeking leadership opportunities. Often includes people who are starting a second career or graduated from seminary.
  • A Resident is typically 22-24 (just out of college), interested in vocational ministry, a leader of leaders in college who was entrusted with significant ministry responsibility.
  • Seminary credit is available to both Residents and Fellows. There are differences regarding the number of hours worked and finances for Fellows and Residents.

Can I get seminary credit as a Resident or Fellow?

Yes! You can earn seminary credit over the course of the year. The number of hours varies depending on your schedule.

Will I get hired when The Fellowship or Residency ends?

The goal of both the Fellowship and Residency is to equip leaders to serve, lead, and strengthen the church globally and locally. Every year, some Fellows and Residents become part of the Watermark staff team while others go on to lead with excellence in international ministries, local churches, and parachurch organizations. Alumni of the Watermark Fellowship and Residency are deployed all over Texas, the United States, and the world. There is no guarantee of a full-time staff position at Watermark upon completion of either the Fellowship or Residency.
