A Meal with International Friends

Invite to the Table

Are you up to the challenge?

The biggest request we're making of the Watermark body this year is to invite an international person or family into your home for a meal. (And if you're originally from overseas, we encourage you to host someone born in the U.S.)

Many people born overseas have never been invited to share this kind of meal.

But imagine the opportunity: an exchange of cultures, a chance to build relationships, a way to honor another person. (Remember, in many cultures, hospitality is considered one of the most crucial qualities a person can possess.)

Whom to Invite

First and foremost, we'd encourage you to invite someone you're already building a relationship with. Or maybe there's someone at your workplace or living down the street whom you just haven't quite gotten to know.

But if no one fits those characteristics, we challenge you to pray for God to introduce you to someone from a foreign land between now and Christmas. Is He able? Of course!

And one particularly simple way to get to know someone from overseas is to join a service project with international students, refugees, or other international people groups. (Click here for that list.) Through these opportunities, you'll at least beginning building relationships. And you might find an opportunity to extend an invitation.

The Hosting Guide

We know this is a big ask, and it's not for everybody. But we've created a great Hosting Guide to provide step-by-step instructions for doing this well.

Thanks for considering this awesome opportunity!

Share Your Stories

If you do have the opportunity to engage people in this way, will you please let us know? There are a few great ways to do that:

  • Share your story by emailing ocastillo@watermark.org.
  • Text your story to 972-591-1320
  • If you share your story on Twitter or Instagram, use the hashtag #WMtablestories

We're not asking you to share stories so that we can treat international people as a "goal" to be reached. We just know that stories of Watermark's body serving others invigorate us AND encourage others to follow suit. We will be very sensitive about how we use any stories you send, or let us know if you'd like to be contacted before we do. We're glad to do that.
