1 Timothy 4:8 tells us that "physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." John draws several parallels between getting in great physical shape and great spiritual shape. In order to succeed we will need to be committed, to make a plan, and lastly to make it happen by practicing delayed gratification and determination, and participating in accountability.
