Three Activities for Preschool Families: The Last Supper

Little did the disciples know that the Passover meal would be Jesus’ last meal on earth. What an experience to sit with our Savior and witness the breaking of bread and pouring of wine, symbolizing Christ’s sacrifice for us. In this season leading up to Easter, be encouraged and reminded of Christ’s incredible love for you and ask yourself how you are being called to sacrifice yourself for others.

HIGHLIGHTS from Sunday…

Talk to your child this week about Jesus’ last meal on earth. The story can be found in all four Gospels (Matthew 26:20-30; Mark 14:17-26; Luke 22:14-30, 39-53; and John 13:21-30) so you can choose one and read it to your child. Jesus explained to His disciples that everything He was doing was because He loved them. He also told them one of His helpers would betray Him. He then took bread and broke it. He told the disciples His body would be broken like the bread. He took wine and drank it. The wine was like His blood that would spill to cover our sins. He told His friends to think of Him when they ate and drank to remember all He had done for them. After dinner Jesus and the disciples went to the garden to pray. Jesus knew how hard this would be so asked God the Father to help Him.

Teaching Truths:

1. Jesus wants us to remember that He gave His life for us

2. Jesus is our Passover lamb

Memory Verse:

"But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." Romans 5:8 (NLT)

3 Activities that Help Us Learn This Week's Teaching Truth:

1. Easter Mobile

Continue adding to your Easter mobile or create a new one with your child using a coat hanger, pieces of yarn and various items. If you are just starting your mobile, write “Easter” on a piece of paper and let your child to decorate it with crayons. Tape this paper across the middle part of the hanger.

Grab a paper cup and plate. Have your child decorate the outside of the cup and plate. Talk with your child about all the people who love them and write their names along the sides of the plate. In the middle of the plate, write Jesus’ name and talk with your child about how Jesus loves them. Punch holes in both the cup and plate and attach them to the hanger with yarn.

Keep the mobile and add to it each week as you approach Easter Sunday.

2. Decorate a Plate and Cup

Talk to your child about how the bread Jesus broke during the Passover meal might have been sitting on a plate and how the wine would have been in a cup. When we look at a plate and cup, we can remember Jesus and His sacrifice for us. Grab a large white paper plate that doesn’t have any designs on it and a paper cup. Around the edge of the plate let your child decorate it with pictures of things he is thankful for using crayons, markers or stickers. Let your child do the same to the outside of the paper cup.

3. Last Supper Story

Spread a table cloth over the table or on the floor. Grab several stuffed animals to be Jesus’ friends and line them up around the cloth. Use the paper plate and cup from the earlier activity and grab some rolls or bread and some juice. Pass out the bread, pour the juice, and read the story about the last supper from the Bible. Ask your child these questions to create discussion.

  1. How did Jesus celebrate the Passover feast with His friends?
  2. Can you remember anything Jesus said to His friends?
  3. Which one of Jesus friends told the soldiers where He was?
  4. Who is our Passover Lamb?

Pray

Jesus, I know you sacrified your life for me because you love me so much. Thank you for your wonderful gift! Help me to honor you by serving others the way you served. Help me to put others before myself.
