Can you imagine the sight of watching Moses’ raise his staff and actually part the Red Sea?  What an awesome demonstration is God’s power!  This week in Starting Blocks, children learned about this great event when God delivered the Israelites safely on dry land while the Egyptians were covered by the Red Sea.  Are there areas of your life where you feel overwhelmed?  This story is such an encouragement that God is all-powerful and He protects us as His children.  As you engage your children in the following activities this week, celebrate the Lord’s provision and protection!

HIGHLIGHTS from Sunday…

Last week we heard about the ten plagues and God rescuing the Israelites from Pharaoh. The Lord told Moses to take them out of Egypt to the land He had promised would be their new home. He gave them a cloud to follow during the day and a pillar of fire by night. The Lord was with them. When Pharaoh realized he didn’t have slaves anymore, he changed his mind and his heart was hardened again. He sent his army with their chariots to follow and capture the Israelites and bring them back to Egypt. The Israelites were afraid and cried out to the Lord when the army came near. Moses told the people to stand firm and believe that the Lord would deliver them. The Lord told Moses to raise his staff and the Red Sea parted. There was a wall of water on the right and on the left. The Israelites were able to walk across on DRY LAND! God is all powerful. The Egyptians continued to follow them but the Lord had Moses stretch his hand over the sea and the waters flowed back together, covering the Egyptians. God protects his children. The Lord saved the Israelites from Pharaoh. God had an amazing plan for the Israelites.

Teaching Truth

  • God is ALL powerful.
  • God protects His children.

Memory Verse:

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go”

Joshua 1:9

Here’s a simple song to help your child (and you) memorize this week’s memory verse!

3 Activities that Remind us How God is in Control of Everything

1. The Red Sea

Take a piece of blue construction paper and fold it into thirds. Cut a piece of brown construction paper into thirds; glue one of the thirds to the middle of the blue paper. (You won’t need the other brown pieces for this activity.) Using a blue crayon or marker, draw wavy lines on the two outer thirds of blue paper. When you fold the blue paper back into thirds, you should not be able to see any brown.  Use paper, pipe-cleaners, or clothespins to create little people and animals to cross the Red Sea. You could also use small dolls or toys. (Be sure one of them is Moses and can hold a staff.) Reenact the story with the people walking out of Egypt toward the Red Sea (blue paper).  When they approach the blue paper, Moses will raise his staff so the sea will part (blue paper will open to expose brown – dry land).

2. Israelites and Egyptians

Use stuffed animals and dolls to create the Israelites and Egyptians. Lay 2 towels (blue if available) side by side on the floor.  Pull the towels back to part the sea and let the Israelites pass through, then have the sea cover the Egyptians.  As you and your child are reenacting the story, talk with him by using these questions.

  1. Do you think the Israelites were afraid?
  2. What did they do when they were afraid?
  3. How did God protect the Israelites?
  4. Did God keep the Israelites safe as they crossed the Red Sea?
  5. What happened to the Egyptians?
  6. What can we learn about God from this story?

3. Moses’ Staff

Grab a sheet of legal size paper and help your child roll it into a tube to form a staff. (Take one end and roll it in a diagonal direction to make into a long tube.)  Using the staff, have your child pretend to be Moses and raise and lower the staff.  Show your child how Moses raised his staff high above his head.

Pray

God, thank you for loving us and protecting us. We know that you are always with us and have a great plan for us. We love you. Amen.
