3 God Chooses David Activities for Preschoolers: Starting Blocks Playbook for November 23rd

102616421_1f6ba2beb4_zWhat matters most to God is what is in our heart, not what we look like.  In our materialistic culture this is a truth that we all struggle to live out.  We often ascent to it with our words but deny it with our actions.  Let the story of God choosing David as King encourage you this week as you reinforce this important lesson with your children.

HIGHLIGHTS from Sunday…

This week your child learned that the Lord rejected Saul as king and told Samuel to go to Bethlehem to visit a man named Jesse. The Lord told Samuel to fill his horn with oil because he had chosen one of Jesse’s sons to be king. God said he needed a king that loves him and will teach the people to love the Lord. Samuel obeyed the Lord and met Jesse and his sons. Jesse had seven strong sons and one young son. After seeing the first seven, strong sons, the Lord had not confirmed to Samuel that he had chosen any of them to be king. Samuel asked Jesse if he had any other sons. Jesse laughed and said yes but he is young and weak but sent for him any way. David came running and the Lord immediately told Samuel, “This is the one. He is a man after my own heart.” Right then in front of his father and brothers, David was anointed king. David did not become king right away. He had to grow up and wait a long time before he actually became king. (1 Samuel 16; 2 Samuel 5)

Teaching Truth

  • What matters most to God is what is in our heart, not what we look like.

Memory Verse:

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”

Psalm 119:105

Here’s a simple song to help your child (and you) memorize this week’s memory verse!

3 Activities that remind us God cares about our hearts

1. In Our Heart

Help your child trace and cut out two identical large hearts from construction paper.  On one heart, write down words that a person would say by looking at your child from the outside such as facial features or types of clothing.  On the second heart write down adjectives that describe character traits that people can’t see such as kindness, patience, etc.  Take the first heart and place it over the second heart and staple it together on each side.  Have your child carefully, lift up the first heart only and cut it in half down the middle.  Lastly, fold back the sides of the heart to see the words written on the second heart.  Talk with your child about how people may only notice the things on the first heart, but God notices the traits on the second chart.  Continue the discussion with your child by using these questions:

  1. What do you think is important to God?
  2. What makes you special to God?

2. What’s Inside

Before doing this activity, find a small toy or item the size of a ring and wrap the item in aluminum foil without your child seeing the item.  Let your child help you make a mixture of Plaster of Paris.  Combine one cup of warm water for every two cups of flour.  Mix the flour and water until there are no lumps and mixture is smooth.  Dip the entire aluminum foil ball into the plaster and let it dry.  After the plaster has dried let your child crack open the ball to see the surprise.

3. God Looks at our Heart

Sing this song with your child to the tune of Farmer and Dell and include these hand motions.

God looks at our heart  (point straight up and then point to heart)

God looks at our heart  (point straight up and then point to heart)

Thank you God for loving us (wrap arms around yourself like you are giving yourself a hug)

God looks at our heart  (point straight up and then point to heart)

Pray

Dear God,
We know that you care about how we love you and others, not what things we have or how we look. Please help us to have hearts that love you and want to serve you.
