3 Paul Meets Jesus Activities for Preschoolers: Starting Blocks Playbook for May 25

starting-blocks-paul-meets-jesus-activitiesIf Jesus changed the heart of a man like Saul of Tarsus, He can change any heart.  As you do these activities with your kids this week, pray for someone in your life who needs Jesus.  Nothing is too hard for our amazing God!  Don’t grow weary in your prayers.

HIGHLIGHTS from Sunday…

This week your child learned about a mean man named Saul, who hated people that loved and followed Jesus. He took these people to jail and was cruel to them. One day he was on his way to a city called Damascus to arrest Christians there, when suddenly a bright light shone around him. Jesus spoke to Saul and asked him why he was doing these awful things to Christians. Jesus then told Saul to rise up, go into the city and find a man named Ananias. When Saul stood, he was blind and stayed that way for three days. Meanwhile, Jesus had spoken to Ananias and told him to go to Saul and cure his blindness. So Ananias did as the Lord said and immediately something like scales fell off Saul’s eyes. His sight was restored and he was filled with the Holy Spirit. Saul’s name was changed to Paul. He had been forgiven. For the rest of his life he told others about Jesus.

Where’s It Found?

Acts 9:1-18

Teaching Truths

  •  Jesus loves us even when we do wrong things.
  •  Jesus forgives us of our sins.

Memory Verse:

“But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

Romans 5:8

Here’s a simple song to help your children (and you) memorize this month’s memory verse!

3 Fun Family Activities to Remind Us of Saul’s Transformation

1.  Butterfly Craft & Snack

Take some time with your child and take a walk down your street or to the park.  Along the way see if you can find a butterfly, talk with your child about how a caterpillar changes into a beautiful butterfly, just as Saul changed from a mean man into a kind, beautiful person who loved God.  For snack time that day, help your child create a butterfly to eat using apple or pear slices, a small carrot stick, one blueberry or blackberry, M&Ms and two pretzel sticks.  Lay the apple slices out to be the wings, place the carrot stick between the slices for the body and place the blueberry/blackberry at the top for the head.  Use the pretzels as the antennas and let your child decorate the wings with M&Ms.  Lastly, eat and enjoy!

2.  On the Road to Damascus

Help your child create several props to act out Saul’s conversation.  Grab a few supplies: yellow construction paper, brown clay or play-doh, round-top clothespin and colored tissue paper.  Let your child make a sun out of the yellow construction paper to represent the bright light.  Next, have your child flatten the clay into a long rectangle to represent the road to Damascus.  Then, help your child draw a face on the clothespin to represent Saul and tear or cut the tissue paper to make confetti for the celebration.  Review with your child what each prop represents.  Tell the story of Saul and let your child act it out using the props.  Here’s some questions to talk about it afterwards.

  •  Who was the man that did not love Jesus or his friends?
  •  When Saul was walking on the road, what caused him to go blind?
  •  What did Jesus tell Saul/Paul to do?
  •  Did Jesus forgive Paul of his sins?
  •  What did Paul do after meeting Jesus?

3. Scales Falling Off

Go outside on a nice day and retell the story of Saul meeting Jesus.  Talk about how Saul had scales over his eyes and when the Holy Spirit came upon him, the scales fell off. Give your child a handful of Rice Krispies and let him hold them up and drop them just as the scales came off Saul’s eyes.

Pray

God, thank you for the greatest gift—Jesus! Help me to love others as you have first loved me. Please forgive my sins and help me to forgive those who sin against me. Amen.
