HIGHLIGHTS from Sunday…

This week your child learned that God wants us to love our neighbor and to serve one another, even it it’s inconvenient. The story of the Good Samaritan tells of a man who was robbed and beaten while he was walking down the road. His clothes were taken and he was left to die. A priest was walking down the same road, but when he saw the man he passed by on the other side. A Levite also came to the place where the man was and passed by without helping. A Samaritan came by the man, took pity on him and helped him. He placed the hurt man on the donkey and took him to an inn. When he had made sure he was taken care of, he paid for the man to stay at the inn until he was better.

3 Fun Family Activities to Remind Us to Be Intentional with Others

1. Man on the Road

Grab one sheet of construction paper and cut out a large paper doll. Let your child draw a face on the doll and use a red crayon to draw several lines or circles to represent “boo-boos”. Next, grab three stuffed animals or dolls to help act out the story. Lay the paper doll on the floor and choose one stuffed animal to be the priest, Levite and Samaritan and walk by the paper doll. Have the Samaritan stuffed animal stop and help the paper doll by placing Band-Aids over his hurts. Here’s some questions to talk about it afterwards.

  • What happened to the man on the road?
  • Did everybody stop to help?
  • Who stopped to help the hurt man?
  • Who is a neighbor?
  • How can we serve one another?
  • Should we help or serve one another even if it means we have less time to play and have fun?

2. Snacks for Others

Invite a friend over to play, but before he comes over talk with your child about being intentional about serving his friend. Make some cookies or muffins together to serve as a special treat for his friend. During snack time, let your child serve his friend asking “Would you like a snack?” and putting them on a plate for him.

3. Action Rhyme

Your child learned this action rhyme on Sunday, help him remember by repeating it again throughout the week.

Good friends care and share—cross arms over chest

Friends give you a helping hand—place hand out in front of you with palm up

I thank God for friends like you—point up to God and then to someone else

Thank you, God for always taking care of us. Please help us be good neighbors and please show us how we can love you by helping others. Amen
