Review Weekend

Around this time of year, it’s normal to spend time reflecting on the previous year, how we want to grow, and resolutions we want to set. In our elementary ministries this week, we did the same bye spending time reviewing what we’ve learned the last few months at K1 Race, On Your Mark, and Crossroads!

MEMORY VERSE: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." Psalm 51:10 (NIV)

This Week’s Finish Line: Review Weekend

In September, we learned about INITIATIVE, which means taking wise action without being told. Our memory verse was Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Then, in October, we talked about DISCERNMENT, which is seeking God’s direction before acting. Proverbs 3:5-6, our memory verse for the month, is great for many life circumstances-- “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” November brought us to THANKFULNESS, a grateful heart that comes from trusting God. Our memory verse challenged us to “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). We rounded out 2017 with PURITY, which we defined as being clean and free from the power of sin. Our memory verse for December is a great verse to pray: “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).

Family Questions:

  1. How can you show INITIATIVE in the new year at school and at home?
  2. What is a tough decision you are facing right now? How can you show DISCERNMENT, instead of depending “on your own understanding?” (Proverbs 3:5)
  3. What is a circumstance in your life where it is easy to be THANKFUL right now? What is something in your life where it is hard to be THANKFUL right now?
  4. Who is someone you can share the good news of PURITY with? (That we can be made pure because of Jesus!)

Bring it Home Conversations & Activities:

* Check out our vision for parents and how to use these activities each week.

Teacher: Meal Time

As you sit around the table, see if your kids can do the hand motions for our Bible timeline. Try reviewing as a family what happened in each of those eras. Click here for our full timeline and click here for a review of each era.

Friend: Drive Time

Make your own flashcards with the four character traits we’ve studied as well as their memory verses. Keep these flashcards in your car so that you can practice them while you’re on the go! You can even add to them each month with our upcoming memory verses!

  • INITIATIVE – Matthew 5:16
  • DISCERNMENT – Proverbs 3:5-6
  • THANKFULNESS – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
  • PURITY – Psalm 51:10

Counselor: Bedtime

One of the character traits we learned about this semester was Thankfulness. As you think about the year 2017, make a list of things that you can be thankful for. Spend time in prayer thanking God for those things.

Coach: Anytime

For the next six weeks, we will be working on memorizing six verses from Romans. These verses make up what we call the Romans Road, and they are a great tool for sharing the gospel with others! This week, work on memorizing Romans 3:23. Click HERE for flash cards to print out and use to help you learn! Don’t forget to check out Join the Journey as we go through the book of Romans this year!

Prayer

Thank God for teaching us to take initiative, have discernment, be thankful, and live in purity! Ask him to continue teaching you and to create in you a pure heart and renew a steadfast spirit in you. Amen.

Looking Ahead

Next week is January and the start of 2018! We will be starting our new character trait of GENTLENESS.
