Christmas Eve with Elementary

What are your favorite family traditions? Do you have any special Christmas traditions? Spend time this year as a family reflecting on the kindness of God to send us His son and how we get to celebrate that every day!

PURITY: Being clean and free from the power of sin

MEMORY VERSE: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." Psalm 51:10 (NIV)

This Week’s Finish Line: Christmas Eve

Luke 2:1-20 tells of Joseph and Mary headed to Bethlehem for a census. When they got there, Mary was like, “Yo, Jo. It’s time!” The only place they could find space for their family was with the animals. Jesus was born and placed in a manger, which is like a giant cereal bowl for cows. Now, while all this was happening in Bethlehem, just outside the town, there were shepherds hanging out with the sheep. Suddenly an angel appeared to them and told them some “good news of great joy” about a Savior being born and lying in a manger (Luke 2:10 NIV). Woah! So, the shepherds thought this news was cool, but they were kind of confused. Why would a KING be in a manger? Shouldn’t he at least be in a palace or something? Anyway, they decided to go check it out and they found Joseph and Mary and baby Jesus. Then, they were so excited that they went off praising and glorifying God, telling everyone about what the angel had said and about what they had seen!

Bring it Home Conversations & Activities:

* Check out our vision for parents and how to use these activities each week.

Teacher: Meal Time

Luke 2:1-20
Take turns going around the table and sharing your favorite part of the Christmas story. What would it have been like to be a shepherd there? Re-read verse 19. What is something about Jesus that you treasure?

Friend: Drive Time

Drive around looking at Christmas lights! Can you imagine if all the electricity in your city went out and it was completely dark for months and then, one day, everything just lit up? That’s kind of what the world was like before Jesus. Talk about how Jesus is the light of the world and how you can share that truth with friends who may not know Him!

Counselor: Bedtime

Luke 2:20 talks about how the shepherds saw God’s faithfulness and praised Him for it. How have you seen God’s faithfulness? Pray and thank God for His faithfulness in your life this year.

Coach: Anytime

Have each member of your family choose their favorite Christmas carol and sing them together! What do you learn about God from each of these songs? Can you find references in the Bible that match the lyrics? Bonus points if you go caroling in your neighborhood!

Prayer

Thank God for bringing Jesus to be born, so that he could live a life that we couldn't. Thank God for being faithful and praise Him just like the shepherds did!
