Disciples See Jesus: Three Activities for Preschool Families

The reality of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead changed the lives of the over 500 disciples that saw Him afterward. In fact, that reality changed history. Reflect on how the resurrection has changed your life as you share these activities with your preschooler this week.

HIGHLIGHTS from Sunday…

This week your child learned Jesus is alive and wants to have a relationship with us. Jesus can live in our hearts. When the women who went to Jesus’ tomb saw that it was empty, they ran to tell the disciples that Jesus was alive, but the disciples did not believe them at first. So Jesus showed Himself to Peter, James and John while they were fishing. He also proved to Thomas that He was truly alive by letting him touch the scars in His hand. When the disciples realized it was truly Jesus, they were overjoyed. Jesus also appeared to many other people during the 40 days after His resurrection, but one day Jesus told his friends goodbye and rose into the clouds. While his friends were looking up into the sky, an angel appeared and told them Jesus had gone to live in heaven. (Ma hew 28:8-10, Mark 16:9-20, Luke 24:13-53 & John 20:10-21:25.)

Teaching Truths:

  1. Jesus rose from the dead.
  2. Jesus showed Himself to His disciples.

Memory Verse:

"But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." Romans 5:8 (NLT)

Here’s a simple song to help your child (and you) memorize this week’s memory verse!

3 Activities that remind us that Jesus is ALIVE:

1. Teddy Graham Snack

For snack time give your child some marshmallows and teddy grahams. Read the story of Jesus visiting his friends and ascending into heaven. While you read the story, your child can act out the story using the teddy grahams for Jesus and his friends and the marshmallows as the clouds. After he has acted out the story, he can eat his special snack and you can ask him some questions to develop a dialogue.

1. Was Jesus real when he came back to earth?
2. How did the disciples know Jesus was real?
3. What are some of the things Jesus did when he was on earth?
4. Where did he go when he went into the clouds?
5. Who was with him in heaven?
6. How can we get to heaven?

2. Ascending Craft

Grab a large foam or paper cup, cotton balls, a foot long length of string, tape, white card stock paper and crayons or markers. Have your child color the cup blue and glue the cotton balls around the outside of the cup. Next, draw a simple Jesus on the card stock paper, cut it out and let your child color it. Poke a hole in the bottom of the cup, thread the string through the hole and tie a large knot in it so it won’t come undone. Help your child tape the other end of the string to the back of Jesus. So when your child pulls up on the knot, Jesus should ascend into the clouds (move into the inside of the cup).

3. Jesus Song

Sing this song to the tune, “Wheels on the Bus.”

Jesus rose and saw his friends, saw his friends, saw his friends
Jesus rose and saw his friends for many days.

Jesus ascended into heaven, into heaven, into heaven
Jesus ascended into heaven to be with God.

Jesus, we thank you for your great sacrifice for us for laying down your life for us. Help us understand how much you love us and how much we need you to save us.
