Have you ever read one story in the Bible and wondered what it had to do with Jesus? Or even why stories about Jesus were in the same book as stories about floods and lions and giants? The truth is, the Bible is actually telling one great story of how God rescues and redeems, but it is made up of a lot of smaller stories that are all connected. We made a visual timeline to help learn the eras, and to see how all the stories work together. (If you'd like to learn more about this, we love and have been helped a lot by the book 30 Days to Understanding the Bible from Max Anders.)
This week in our elementary ministries, we learned about the whole Bible, from Genesis to Revelation! We used our Bible Timeline to talk through each era of the Bible and started to learn how God’s Word is perfectly pieced together to teach us the story of God’s people, the need for His Son, and His plan for the world. For a further explanation of each era, download this pdf to learn more about key events and key people from each era. We think this is a very helpful tool for kids (and adults!) to learn how the Bible works together as one giant story about who God is and what He does. If it sounds like a lot to learn in one week, don’t worry! We’ll spend the 5th weekends of the month this year learning more about each era, how it fits into the story of the Bible, and why it matters for us today!
- Why do you think it is important to talk about how the Bible works together?
- Look at the timeline together with your kids. Off the top of your heads, can you name a person and/or story from any of these eras?
- Have you ever read a story in the Bible and wondered what it had to do with the rest of the stories?
- What is the big story God is telling us through the whole Bible?
* Check out our vision for parents and how to use these activities each week.
Bring it Home Conversations & Activities:
Teacher: Meal Time
At dinner one night this week, take turns having each family member share their favorite Bible story. Why is it your favorite? What does it tell you about God? What does it tell you about His people? Does it teach you any important lessons today? Using the Timeline Era Overview, try to figure out which era each story falls in and talk about how it fits into the main story of the Bible (God’s rescue plan for His people).
Friend: Drive Time
Ask your kids to teach you the Bible Timeline hand motions that they learned this past weekend at church. Use time in the car this week to practice the hand motions and see if everyone in your family can have them all memorized (in order) by the end of the week!
Spend time praying and thanking God for how He has perfectly pieced together every part of His Word. Thank Him that the Bible isn’t just a book of rules or even just a bunch of random stories that don’t matter for today, but that it’s one big story of God’s love for His people. Ask Him to help you understand more of His Word this year at K1 Race, On Your Mark, or Crossroads.
Print off these era flash cards (or make your own!) to play a game with your kids to see who can match each picture with each era. Make the game harder or add bonus points for anyone who can name the key people and key events from each era.
Lord, thank you for your Word! Thank you that we can learn about who you are through the Bible. We pray that you would help us know and love you more as we continue reading and studying your Word. Thank you that the Bible is not a set of rules for us, but a huge story of your love for your people.
Next week we will learn a new character trait, Knowledge!
