All of God's Promises Are Kept in Jesus!

Instead of leaving us to wonder about who Jesus is, God’s Word is filled with reasons we can know that Jesus is the Son of God and that He alone can save us from our sin. The Old Testament contains tons of promises about the Messiah that God had promised to send to save the Israelites. Every single one is kept in Jesus! And even better news? God knew all along that the Messiah, Jesus, didn’t just come to save the Israelites, but anyone who puts their trust in Him!

HOPE: Having confidence in God's promises!

MEMORY VERSE: “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13 (NLT)

This Week’s Finish Line: All God's Promises are Kept in Jesus!

During the Kingdom era on our Bible timeline, a man named David was chosen to be the second king of Israel. Even though David definitely wasn’t perfect, the Bible says he was a man after God’s own heart, meaning he loved God and trusted Him. In 1 Chronicles 17, God makes an amazing promise to David. David hadn’t done anything special to earn this promise. It was an opportunity for God to show the whole world that He is good and always keeps His promises. God promised David that He would make David’s name famous and that through David’s family, a descendant would come who would have a strong kingdom and who would reign as king forever. Fast forward almost 1,000 years to the book of Luke. God sent an angel to a young girl named Mary who was engaged to a descendant of David. The angel told her that she would give birth to a son named Jesus. Jesus wasn’t going to be just like any other baby, but the Son of God who would reign as King forever, just like God had promised to David.

Family Questions:

READ 1 CHRONICLES 17:7-14

1. God made a promise to David about his family in these verses. What was it? (God promise David’s name will be remembered as great among men. One of his sons will be king and build a temple for God. He promises to never take His love away from him. He also promises that one of David’s descendants will reign forever as king.)

READ 1 CHRONICLES 17:23-24

2. Why do you think David was so certain God would keep His promise? What did David do in response to God’s promises? (He believed God’s promise and worshiped Him.)

3. Why would God make promises like this? Was it because David was so great? Did the kingdom of Israel do anything to deserve it? (God did it to make His own name more famous. Other nations and people would see that God keeps His promises and is worthy to be trusted and worshiped.)

READ LUKE 1:26-33

4. What did Gabriel tell Mary about her son? (He said Jesus is the Son of God. He will be given David’s throne and reign forever.) Does that sound familiar? How was God’s promise to David kept in Jesus? (Jesus came from the line of David and was God. He will reign forever in heaven.)

Bring it Home Conversation & Activities:

Teacher: Meal Time

Review God’s promise to David in 1 Chronicles 17:7-17 and how He fulfilled His promise in Luke 1:26-33. Does anything make you doubt God’s promises? If so, what? What are some ways God has already kept His promises to you in the last week? Month? Etc.? What are other promises God has for you that you can put your hope in?

Friend: Drive Time

Write each word from this month’s memory verse (Romans 15:13 NLT) on a sticky note. Post the notes on the inside of your car…on the windows, backs of the seat, etc. As you drive around, practice saying the verse. Each time you come to a stop light, remove one of the sticky notes and see if you can still say the verse. You could also mix the sticky notes up and have your sibling unscramble them before you get to the next light!

Counselor: Bedtime

Thank God for all of the promises He has already fulfilled through Jesus and for those that are to come. Ask Him to help you put your hope fully in Him and not in temporary things. Thank Him for the hope He gives through the Holy Spirit.

Coach: Anytime

Summer is a great time to review our Bible timeline! Go over an era each week, talk about which era different Bible stories are in, or come up with other fun ways to remind yourself and your kiddos that the Bible is one big story! (click here for Timeline Era Overview, and click here for a printable timeline)

Prayer

Thank God for the many times He has stayed faithful despite your failure. Ask Him to remind you who He is in times when you’re tempted to forget. Thank Him that His love for you is not dependent on anything you have done and nothing can separate you from Him.

Looking Ahead

Next week we will continue with the character trait, HOPE. Excited to see you there!
