Teaching Responsibility: Boundaries and Consequences

The goal of any parent is to raise responsible children who fear God and walk with Him. The best way to accomplish this goal is to set clear boundaries and enforce consequences consistently. In this episode we will define "boundaries", how to set them and enforce consequences to dishonoring them. A key principle is learning how to say "no" as we discipline our children and teach them responsibility. The Word of God tells us very clearly that discipline is the most loving thing we can do as parents and God is our model as He himself disciplines those He loves. (Hebrews 12:4)

The Prodigal Parable: A Salvation Story

The Prodigal story in Luke 15 is often used as a guideline for parenting wayward children. Although parts of this story can be used to discuss parenting techniques, Jesus tells the parable to tell us how important each one of us are to God. He cares for our prodigals and He cares of each one of us. The key to bringing our prodigals home is to give our children to God and trust in Him. We cannot do that without a sincere belief in Him. We'll discuss the importance of our own salvation and the power it gives us in this prodigal journey.

As Director of Watermark's Pastoral Care Ministry, Jim Wimberley is directly involved in helping others. He cites wisdom from Scripture about taking care of ourselves.
The Process

We live in America and we all want a quick fix. Unfortunately that is rarely possible when dealing with a prodigal. It took time to get here and it will take time to get back on track. God's timing is perfect, but He is never early. We will discuss the power of paradigms and the difficulty of changing them, emphasizing keys for change and encouragement to persevere from scripture.

Hope and Faith in the Midst of Chaos

Peter tells us in this passage that one benefit of being born again is that we receive a living hope. We need a hope in something greater than ourselves to survive suffering. How do we get this hope? How does this hope operate and how how do we activate it in a practical way day by day? This episode addresses these questions with applications for families suffering through the chaos that defines parenting a prodigal child.

There's a New Sheriff in Town

Most parents with prodigal children have set down rules and regulations they have not followed through with. They have often made boundaries that are ill-defined and rarely enforced when things get tough. Prodigals know our weaknesses and will attack precisely at this point. This episode is the culmination of the prodigal ministry curriculum. The curriculum teaches a process that takes time, teaches biblical principles, grows our relationship with and knowledge of God, and teaches the value of biblical community in the process. Once you are ready, you must become the "New Sheriff". This episode discusses why there is a need for, and how you become, a new sheriff. A sheriff who finally enforces boundaries and restores peace.

The Plan

Implementing a wise plan is the key to the prodigal's healing. We discourage families of prodigals from executing a plan until they are ready to implement it to the full. A written plan is effective only if those responsible for enforcement are on the same page. Rigid enforcement gives freedom to parents, siblings, and spouses who struggle with co-dependency in any form. It also lets the prodigal finally take responsibility for their actions, which is mandatory for true recovery.

Living Guilt-Free

Most of us who suffer with a prodigal in the family feel guilt. This guilt can cause paralysis, inaction and isolation, all tools of Satan. This material will give scriptural support for letting go of this guilt so that you can stop enabling and start leading your prodigal well. We will discuss in depth the difference between guilt and conviction by the Holy Spirit, a concept that is critical for families of prodigals to understand.
